What is an Emotional Support Animal?

Emotional Support Animals provide companionship and comfort to individuals experiencing emotional or psychological challenges. Unlike Service Animals, ESAs do not require specialized training but do require a letter written by a licensed mental health professional for housing in the state of Ohio.

ESAs, Service Animals, and Therapy Animals serve different purposes. ESAs provide comfort and support to individuals with emotional or psychological conditions, while Service Animals are specifically trained and prescribed to assist individuals with disabilities. Therapy Animals, on the other hand, are used in therapeutic settings to help multiple people.

If someone needs an ESA letter for housing, it's important to go through a proper assessment process to determine eligibility. This letter can then be provided for established clients or those referred by professionals.

ESA Assessment

Our assessment process is designed to evaluate your needs and determine if an ESA is appropriate for you. This assessment is conducted by licensed professionals experienced in mental health.

ESA Letter

Upon approval, you will be provided with a legitimate ESA letter, which can be used for housing accommodations. This letter is essential for ensuring your rights under the Fair Housing Act.

How It Works

1. Initial Contact

* Potential Clients should complete the consultation form.

* Current clients should discuss the need with their therapist.

*Other Mental Health Providers/Medical Providers can complete the referral form too.

2. Assessment Session

Schedule a comprehensive assessment to evaluate the need for an ESA (in person or telehealth only).

3. Decision

After the assessment, the decision is shared with you. If not approved, an explanation will be provided along with resources.

Once approved, the follow up appointment is scheduled, a treatment plan will be created or updated and resources will be provided in the follow up appointment.

**Frequency of treatment is unique to the individual and will be discussed during the follow up therapy session.

4. Recieve Your Letter

When approved, you will receive your ESA letter for housing during your follow up appointment.

FAQs

How long is the ESA letter valid?

Your letter will be valid for one year, after which a new assessment is required.

Can my ESA go everywhere with me?

ESAs are not granted the same access rights as Service Animals. They are recognized for housing accommodations.

What if I already have an ESA?

If you already have an ESA but need a letter, an assessment is still required in order to provide the required documentation.

What are the fees?

Can I get an ESA letter without therapy?

No. Established and referred clients should be engaging in on-going therapy with their primary therapist to qualify for an assessment. Those approved for a letter, must continue to engage in therapy according to the treatment plan.

I need my letter ASAP. What is the turn around time?

The initial letter is provided in the follow up session. If under a time constraint and are in need of the letter prior to 5 days, arrangements will be made to have your follow up session sooner. A RUSH fee will be added to the cost of the letter.

I recieved an ESA letter for housing last year. Can I use the same letter for this year?

No. The letters expire after 1 year. Each year, assessment for need is provided. Each year, a new letter is provided. Same fees apply.
